Psychometric Evaluations’ Role En Route to Success

Psychometric evaluation is to be welcomed – not feared or viewed with a degree of trepidation, as some people undergoing these assessments tend to feel. This negative perception possibly springs from long-held insecurity that is the result of tests and examinations at school.

The fearful test candidate may once have been afraid of incurring a particularly strict teacher’s wrath at pupils’ poor test results and/or a scholar being found wanting in their academic/practical performance. True fear tends to foster and amplify feelings of insecurity; it rocks the proverbial boat and upsets the equilibrium.

Psychometric Evaluation - Orgro

Merely thinking about being tested and evaluated, combined with the anticipation of such an event, brings on that unpleasant tight feeling in the chest and butterflies in the stomach – an internalised state of silent terror. That’s not exactly a nice place to be, especially if peers or colleagues appear confident and unaffected by the prospect of being assessed. No one likes to feel “less than”…

These candidates have likely acquired a by now inherent fear of undergoing tests, a deep-seated fear, which is enhanced by the fact that anything described as “psycho” is mistrusted, primarily because of a lack of knowledge about and understanding of an unknown or foreign concept – psychometric evaluation, in this instance.

What is Psychometric Evaluation?

It’s possibly best to highlight what psychometric evaluations’ role is in a business environment, in order to understand what it actually is, but we, at Orgro, will touch on both of these aspects. Even in easily understood terms, a full, comprehensive picture is always more effective and meaningful than half an image – a concept and credo that particularly applies to people, perceptions and reality.

Psychometric tests are designed to assess and “provide a meticulous and objective summary of an individual’s aptitude, strengths, development areas and character”. Tests reveal traits and talents which are normally not necessarily or immediately apparent.

Purpose

These evaluations are done to enable the responsible decision-maker within an organisation to “make informed decisions at crucial moments”, typically in the areas of recruitments to make new appointments, promote the right people and/or reassign employees to positions for which they are well-suited.

Psychometric evaluations, which may only be administered by a registered psychometrist, are a valuable aid in placing the right person in the right job, one which will stimulate and fulfil individual incumbents, as well as assist the organisation in building a productive, stable workforce.

People are a concern’s most valuable assets, vital to the success and sustainability of any and every organisation and its endeavours, regardless of the nature and scope of its products, services and mission.
