“Change is the only constant in life”, is accredited to the ancient Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, who was born in approximately 535 BC in Ephesus in the then Persian Empire. He “believed in a unity of opposites and harmony in the world” and recognised that change was “ever-present”. Was he possibly the forefather of what would become 20th century change management?
COVID-19 is one of the most recent manifestations of drastic change, affecting one and all worldwide. Authorities have introduced numerous protocols to manage and curtail the spread of the virus. Of necessity, people adopt these new measures to reach a “new normal” – they don their face masks as a matter of course when out in public spaces – without question or second thought.
Additionally, now that change management in modern society has become such a recognised part of corporate growth and success, one can almost hear the long-dead philosopher say “I told you so”. Today, there’s even more to be said in support of Heraclitus’s credo.
Resisters to new ways of doing things and their nay-saying counterparts should remember that managed change in the workplace soon becomes their new normal too, once accepted and implemented, after being explained and communicated openly, honestly and effectively. This is one field of expertise we offer at our company, Orgro, which specialises in bringing out the best potential of your organisation and your people.
In business and similar organisations, as well as people’s personal lives, failure to change, adapt to different circumstances and new demands in order to refocus to adopt a new vision invariably lead to stagnation, boredom and possibly obsolescence too.
Despite this, many like to remain in a comfort zone into which they’ve long since settled. These folks actively and/or passively resist new strategies. They don’t want their boat rocked, and thus they adopt a negative attitude towards whatever is new or different, especially in the workplace.
However, once employees understand the reasons for doing things differently in future and the concurrent management process that’s involved, resisters usually become the staunchest supporters of innovations, since they have actual experience of both sides of the change management coin.
To being with, the status quo, wart and all, should be identified in an objective, transparent manner. Without this initial evaluation, it’s not possible to plan the way forward efficiently or set a realistic end goal – the desired outcome.
All procedures to alter and improve the way things are done and goals are accomplished in an organisation should be instituted via various steps, which allows management and facilitators to monitor, assess and mentor each step, as well as the participants, their strengths, weaknesses, potential and overall performance.
